Dental Filling

A close-up of molars with gold, amalgam, and composite fillings, emphasizing different materials available for cavity treatment. In the course of daily life, all kinds of things can befall our teeth, from accidentally chipping a tooth with a fork to a minor cavity. When life happens, Riverstone Dental Group offers dental fillings to protect your teeth and keep your smile beautiful and healthy.

Dental Filling Basics

Dental fillings are a basic restorative treatment used to fix many minor issues. Small cavities can be filled, as can tiny chip fractures, cracks, and other damage. Fillings can prevent further erosion and fracturing. If a damaged tooth does not get a filling, it may eventually need a crown or even an extraction. Fillings are very low-impact and non-invasive, so they are always preferable to other oral interventions.

Why We Recommend Fillings

We recommend fillings so that minor damage does not become major damage. Cavities are never ideal, but it is much better to fill a cavity now than to let it spread. Fillings cannot fix major issues. More serious dental issues may require additional treatments, potentially even surgery, such as when getting an implant to replace a lost tooth. You may benefit from getting a filling if you play contact sports, especially if you do not use an athletic mouthguard. If you habitually grind your teeth, or if you have a habit of eating ice, biting your nails, chewing on pencils, and other things that can damage the teeth.

Dental Filling Materials

We provide several materials to select from for your filling, depending on where the filling is, and how extensive it needs to be. The most affordable option is a silver filling. While strong, it is not the best suited to any teeth that are visible when you smile because of its distinctive silvery gleam. A better option for fillings that will be visible are composite fillings. We can polish these so that they are nearly indistinguishable from the teeth next to it. The premium filling material is ceramic. Ceramic blends with your teeth even better than a composite filling, while also being extremely durable and resistant to staining. As even the toughest filling does not last forever, we can upgrade your silver or composite filling to high-quality ceramic.

Getting a Tooth Filling

Because fillings are so low-impact, getting yours will be very easy. You will need some local anesthetic so that we can excise the unhealthy areas of the tooth, but stronger sedatives should be unnecessary even if you have sensitive teeth. Molar fillings are the fastest because the filling just needs to be placed and polished, while canine and incisor fillings take a bit longer. Our goal is for your filling to be impossible to notice, so we take the time to apply a tooth-hued coating.
