Clear Aligners

But there is in fact such a thing, and it can revolutionize your orthodontic treatment. Called clear aligners, these innovative “invisible braces” are available at Riverstone Dental Group.

Everything You Need to Know About Clear Aligners

Clear aligners do the same job as traditional orthodontics, such as braces, but without any of the metal wires and brackets that make so many patients, especially adults, wary of orthodontics. Instead, Clear aligners is a simple plastic aligner that looks like a transparent mold of your teeth. Known as trays, these aligners are created in stages. You will wear each tray for approximately two weeks, letting your teeth gradually adjust, before moving onto the next tray. These trays can be taken in and out of the mouth at any time, meaning your daily life is only minimally impacted compared to braces.

Why Patients Love Clear Aligners

Our patients love clear aligners because they can receive quality orthodontic care with almost no disruption to their daily lives. Clear aligners trays are very difficult to spot, so you can still smile proudly. They can be removed, so you can eat anything you want without fear of damaging the appliance or getting food stuck in them. You can even brush, floss, and whiten your teeth just like you normally do. In fact, whitening can actually be more effective with clear aligners, as the trays will keep whitening toothpaste and other materials in contact with your teeth for longer.

Who We Recommend Clear Aligners For

Clear aligners are meant for young adults, such as older teens and college kids, and professional adults who count on having an unblemished smile. We know that for older patients in particular, the prospect of having to wear braces can be unappealing enough to make them reluctant to get any kind of orthodontic treatment. Unfortunately, putting off orthodontics will only make the problem worse. Teeth will continue to shift or wear down until more drastic interventions are necessary. Clear aligners can prevent this and can often do so faster than traditional braces.

Who We Do Not Recommend Clear Aligners For?

We advise against clear aligners for younger patients in particular, as they are typically not yet responsible enough to keep the trays in for the recommended 22 hours a day. Resisting the temptation to take them out and leave them out can be difficult, and failure to wear them enough can drastically slow down treatment. We also do not recommend clear aligners for patients with major orthodontic issues. Plastic aligners simply cannot exert the same strength that metal brackets and wires can.

If you are not a good fit for clear aligners, you do have other options when it comes to discreet orthodontics. Ceramic braces can be tooth-hued or clear and are much less noticeable than metal. There are also lingual braces which go behind your teeth, so that they are truly invisible.
